Autoimmune Atrophic Gastritis (AIG): A chronic inflammatory condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks its own stomach lining, destroying the specialized parietal and chief cells responsible for producing acid, pepsin, and intrinsic factor (Vavallo et al., 2024; Yu et al., 2023).
The Misconception of Aging: While it was long believed that aging naturally decreases stomach acid, modern research shows this is a myth; healthy older adults produce normal acid levels, and low acid is instead driven by underlying atrophic gastritis, chronic H. pylori infections, or long-term PPI use (Vara-Luíz et al., 2025).
