Holistic SIBO Recovery: Nutrition, Herbals, and Motility

1. Simple Dietary Approaches

Diet protocols help starve bacterial overgrowth short term so your gut can heal (Cleveland Clinic, 2024):

  • Low FODMAP Diet: Temporarily removes fermentable carbohydrates, helping 50% to 80% of people feel rapid relief from bloating (Patcharatrakul et al., 2019). Studies show an 80.85% SIBO resolution rate after 4 weeks (Gong et al., 2025). Note: This is a short term reset, not a permanent lifestyle (Więcek et al., 2022).

  • Low Starch and Low Sucrose Diets: Cutting back on starches and sugars works just as well as Low FODMAP, showing nearly identical success rates (79.2% vs. 78.2%) (Roth et al., 2024).

  • Elemental Diets: For tough cases, a 2 week pre digested liquid diet starves bacteria while nourishing you, normalizing breath tests in 73% of people (Rezaie et al., 2025).

2. Natural Antimicrobials & Stomach Acid Support

  • Targeted Herbal Supports: Antibiotics like Rifaximin have up to a 90% short term clearance rate (Furnari et al., 2018), but over 64% of people relapse within 18 weeks (Lembo et al., 2016). Natural options offer strong support: olive leaf tea (1.7g twice daily) yielded an 88% breath test normalization rate after 2 months (Zafar et al., 2025), and pomegranate extract (656 mg phenolics) reduced gut inflammation while lowering methane producing microbes (González‐Sarrías et al., 2018).

Gentle exercise like walking or yoga keeps motility moving, though extreme overexertion can reduce blood flow to the gut (Al-Beltagi et al., 2025). Traditional Thai abdominal massage has even been shown to outperform Senokot laxatives for easing constipation (Boonruab et al., 2020).

  • Calm Your Nervous System: Chronic stress shuts down digestion. Stress relieving practices like Tai Chi and deep breathing help rebalance the gut brain axis to keep your digestive tract moving (Al-Beltagi et al., 2025).

4. Probiotics & Targeted Fibers

Supplements Key Findings:

  • Saccharomyces boulardii Antibiotics alone cleared 25% of cases; S. boulardii alone cleared 33%; combining both jumped to a 55% clearance rate (García-Collinot et al., 2019).

  • S. boulardii (CNCM I-745) 250 mg twice daily for 3 months 80% of participants became SIBO negative (vs. 23% on placebo) while reducing systemic inflammation (Efremova et al., 2024).

  • PHGG + Rifaximin 5 g/day PHGG fiber alongside treatment SIBO clearance jumped from 62.1% to 85.0% when PHGG fiber was added (Furnari et al., 2010).

  • PHGG Alone 6 g/day for 12 weeks significantly reduced gas and bloating compared to placebo, with benefits lasting weeks after stopping (Niv et al., 2016).

  • ABB C24 Postbiotic Prebiotic and postbiotic blend for 14 days, directly reduced methane producing microbes in constipated adults (Lévano et al., 2025).
